On AI Deepfakes In Bihar Elections, A Poll Body Warning To Political Parties

The Election Commission has issued a stern warning to political parties ahead of the Bihar assembly elections, urging them not to misuse artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create deepfakes or distort information. In a statement released on Thursday, the poll authority emphasized the need for transparency in political campaigns, particularly with the rise of AI-generated content.

The Commission reminded political parties, star campaigners, and candidates that any AI-generated or digitally enhanced content shared on social media or used in advertisements must be clearly labeled. Content should be marked as “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content” to avoid misleading voters.

The Election Commission further stated that a strict monitoring system is in place to keep a close eye on social media platforms and ensure that the integrity of the election process is not compromised by misinformation or manipulated media.

“The Commission advises political parties against the use of AI-based tools to create deepfakes or spread misinformation via social media,” the statement read. “It is crucial to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and prevent any distortion of facts.”

This warning follows similar directives issued during the last Lok Sabha elections, when the Election Commission took steps to combat the spread of fake news and misleading content powered by AI.

Bihar’s 243 assembly seats will be contested in two phases, on November 6 and November 11, with the vote count scheduled for November 14.
